PlanCompass report highlights

PlanCompass reports are prepared annually by Humana for individual self-funded employers and for the BHCG, including aggregate information for both fully insured and self-funded employers. PlanCompass reports include comparative analyses against market and prior-year data to give individual employers and the BHCG personalized observations and recommendations. The goal of the PlanCompass reports is to help employers and the BHCG:

  • Identify areas of concern
  • Understand the level of consumer engagement
  • Develop strategies to control spend

Some highlights of the 2013 PlanCompass report – for BHCG employers in aggregate – comparing data from 2011 with 2012 data include:

  • For all BHCG employers there was a 1.4 percent decrease in the number of large claimants (> $75,000) in 2012 compared to 2011.
  • The generic dispensing rate for all BHCG employers improved almost four percentage points from 2011 to 2012.
  • Self-funded employers using the Health Help program (radiology diagnostic imaging pre-authorization CT scans, PET scans, MRIs and cardiac nuclear medicine) saw a 3.8 percent decrease per 1,000 members, in aggregate, in the utilization of these scans in 2012 compared to 2011.
  • Inpatient days per 1,000 enrollees dropped from 199 per 1,000 in 2011 to 183 per 1,000 in 2012, while inpatient admissions per 1,000 enrollees dropped from 48 per 1000 in 2011 to 47 per 1000 in 2012.
  • The top three areas of health care spend in 2012 were musculoskeletal, oncology and digestive.

89.3 percent of enrollees identified as those who would benefit from participation in a clinical management program (e.g. case management, personal heath coach, personal nurse) were actually participating in one.
