A New Frontier: The Impact of Anti-Obesity Drugs

Hardly an hour goes by without consumers seeing an advertisement about prescription anti-obesity drugs, which can not only improve blood sugar control but also lead to weight loss. This class of type 2 diabetes drugs, known as glucagon-like peptide 1 or GLP-1s, are sold under several different brand names by major pharmaceutical companies. Understanding about how these drugs work and their efficacy and cost is critical for employers and health plan sponsors as they become more popular and impact benefit plans.

BHCG welcomes employers, their advisors, providers and other health care stakeholders to its latest Delivering Value Series (DVS) symposium. The goals of this symposium are to:

  • Understand obesity management and the role of GLP-1s as a solution in benefit plans
  • Get details about the impact of benefit plan design on the utilization of anti-obesity drugs
  • Share information about which populations should have access to these drugs
  • Explore the science of GLP-1s and obesity
  • Provide statistics regarding obesity’s economic impact and its impact on health and chronic disease
  • Discuss a comprehensive medical solution approach to address obesity
  • Explore the cost of GLP-1s vs. the cost of unmanaged obesity
  • Understand the role of Navitus, BHCG’s pharmacy benefit management partner
  • Discuss the weight loss coverage landscape for employer groups
  • Explore criteria options for weight loss coverage
