Annual Meeting Recap: Strong Membership Growth and a Bright Future

Many thanks to all who planned, participated and attended our Annual Meeting, Health Care Forecast: Brighter Skies Ahead on October 24. Attendance was up substantially this year, reflecting our positive momentum with member employer growth and retention. Judging by the feedback we received after the meeting, it appears the morning's program imparted valuable knowledge and actionable information.

Strong membership growth

I was pleased to share an overview of our activities, highlighted by substantial gains we have experienced in membership. While retaining all self-funded employers for 2018, we added numerous employers in 2017 and for 2018. In 2017 we added:

  • Almon, Inc.
  • American Metal Technologies
  • Bemis Manufacturing Company
  • Inlanta Mortgage, Inc.
  • Krones, Inc.
  • Nordco, Inc.
  • Oldenburg Group, Inc.
  • Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry Company

For 2018 we have membership commitments from:

  • Associated Banc-Corp.
  • Bon-Ton Stores, Inc.
  • Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin, Inc.
  • Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, Inc.
  • Reinhart Partners, Inc.

We will be adding more member employers for January 1, 2018 and we fully expect strong growth throughout 2018 and for January 1, 2019.

Leading Change, Creating Value award

The Leading Change, Creating Value Award was presented to the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership (MHCP) for their dedication to improving health care coverage, access, care coordination and community health for underserved populations. Their efforts complement the mission of BHCG to improve the health of our member employers' employees and their families and the community at large. Accepting the award on behalf of the MHCP were Bernie Sherry, senior vice president, Ascension Healthcare/Wisconsin Ministry Market executive and Joy Tapper, executive director, MHCP.

Keynote address

Todd Smasal, director, total rewards at Northwestern Mutual delivered the keynote address: Choose Well. Be Well. - Engaging Employees. Todd shared Northwestern Mutual's journey to positively impact its health care cost trend and outcomes through better consumer decisions. He shared what his organization has done to motivate employees and dependents to seek care from high performing providers through the UnitedHealthcare Premium® designation program and benefit tiering.

OpenNotes presentation

John Santa, MD, MPH, director of dissemination, OpenNotes and Dr. Dirk Steinert, medical director and chair - clinical practice council, Ascension Wisconsin - Columbia St. Mary's discussed the global initiative, OpenNotes®. OpenNotes is an international movement dedicated to making health care more open and transparent by urging doctors, nurses, therapists, and others to share their visit notes with patients.


We recognized numerous individuals and organizations that have contributed to BHCG's success in the past and will be integral to advancing our strategy going forward. A listing of these individuals and organizations can be found in the executive summary of the meeting.
