Business Coalitions make Choosing Wisely® Employer Toolkit available

The National Business Coalition on Health (NBCH) and Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH), working in collaboration with Consumer Reports, recently released the Choosing Wisely® Employer Toolkit – materials to help employers educate their employees about the importance of talking with their physicians about their medical care.

Choosing Wisely is an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation and aims to answer the question, “How can physicians and patients have the important conversations necessary to ensure the right care is delivered at the right time?” More than 35 leading medical specialty societies, representing more than 500,000 physicians have joined the initiative.  Each specialty society has developed a list of Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question in recognition of the importance of physician and patient conversations to improve care and eliminate unnecessary tests and procedures.

These lists represent specific, evidence-based recommendations physicians and patients should discuss to help make wise decisions about the most appropriate care based on their individual situation. Each list provides information on when tests and procedures may be appropriate. For example, here is the list from the American Academy of Family Physicians on Ten Things Physicians and Patients Should Question.

Consumer Reports, using their expertise in creating consumer-friendly communications, has translated the clinical recommendations gathered into insightful tips and free resources for the general public.

The materials found in the Choosing Wisely Employer Toolkit can be used by employers of all sizes to easily build new campaignsand integrate Choosing Wisely materials into existing resources.The Toolkit includes:

  • Eight ready‐to‐use articles;
  • More than ten tip sheets from Consumer Reports;
