Informed Decision Making initiative –
employer implementation begins

In recent editions of The Catalyst (Spring 2011, February 2012 and April 2012) we have reported on our Informed Decision Making initiative. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to assist consumers in making better health care decisions. We reported in April that the BHCG selected Boston-based Best Doctors, Inc. as its informed decision making vendor. With the Agreement now executed, four self-funded BHCG member employers will implement the program beginning September 1.

Beginning January 1, 2013, the majority of our self-funded employers have committed to implementing the program. Humana will also implement the program for its BHCG fully insured employer groups.

The innovative Best Doctors program will offer consumers facing difficult medical decisions access to expert medical consultations in addition to a range of other tools and resources so they may have the confidence to make informed decisions about their care. “Since our inception, the BHCG has been thoroughly committed to assisting employees in becoming better health care consumers. Offering the outstanding services of Best Doctors is another step forward in meeting that commitment,” states Dianne Kiehl, the BHCG’s executive director.

More than a traditional second opinion, Best Doctors delivers a comprehensive evaluation of a patient’s medical condition – providing value to both patients and treating physicians. Published studies show that anywhere from 15–44 percent of patients are receiving the wrong diagnosis and treatment, and Best Doctors is leading the charge to significantly reduce that number. In 2011 Best Doctors had corrected diagnoses in 29 percent of cases in the U.S., and corrected treatment in nearly 60 percent of cases – resulting in considerably improved patient outcomes and cost savings.

Best Doctors now covers more than 30 million people in every major region of the world, providing access to the top five percent of doctors worldwide to ensure correct diagnosis and treatment planning. Currently 668 physicians in the metropolitan Milwaukee area participate in the Best Doctors network.

“When the BHCG sought an informed decision making vendor, we had a vision of what we expected and Best Doctors exceeded our expectations,” says Lisa Mrozinski, first vice president, total rewards manager – benefits, at Robert W. Baird & Co. and a member of the BHCG committee that selected Best Doctors. “Best Doctors will serve as a trusted advisor and resource for consumers confronting serious medical conditions.”

Best Doctors will offer BHCG members’ employees and dependents several services including:

  • InterConsultation Service – provides an expert medical consultation with a nationally renowned physician to confirm a diagnosis and treatment plan. The service uses the top physicians in the country who collaborate with the treating physician to ensure the best possible care is being delivered.
  • Ask the Expert – access to expert physicians for non-emergencies when a diagnosis is confirmed but questions remain regarding a treatment plan.
  • Explore My Options – includes clinical coaching and on-line decision aids for members facing surgery, to determine if less invasive treatment options are appropriate.
  • FindBestDoc Service – connects members with the right in-network expert specialist or subspecialist for their conditions.

“The pressure on individuals today to understand all of their treatment options is enormous – especially when doctors have less and less time to spend educating their patients. Imagine how challenging it is to make the right health care decisions when you aren’t even sure you have the right diagnosis,” noted Evan Falchuk, vice chairman of Best Doctors. “By utilizing Best Doctors, employees of BHCG members will have access to the brightest minds in medicine to ensure the right diagnosis and treatment plan. Then we can help educate employees about their best treatment options. Our solution will provide employees the peace of mind and the confidence that comes with knowing that they are making well-informed decisions with world-renowned experts in their corner.”
